Exploring Sustainable Tourism: A Journey Towards Balancing Culture, Environment, and Community

I’m excited to share that our latest paper, Tourism for Tomorrow: Balancing Culture Conservation and Community, has just been published in the Journal of Responsible Tourism Management. The research delves into the critical topic of sustainable tourism, with a focus on two captivating regions: Mauritius and Queensland.

Why Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable tourism is more than just a buzzword. It represents a strategic approach to tourism that seeks to balance economic growth with the preservation of cultural heritage and environmental stewardship. In many tourist destinations around the world, rapid growth has created both opportunities and challenges, from environmental degradation to the risk of cultural homogenisation.

Our research offers insights into these challenges and explores how community-based tourism (CBT) could be a potential solution for regions grappling with sustainability. CBT empowers local communities by placing them at the centre of tourism development, fostering a sense of ownership, and ensuring that the economic benefits remain local.

Key Findings from Mauritius and Queensland

The paper presents compelling case studies from Mauritius and Queensland, regions known for their unique cultural heritage and natural beauty. Both face similar issues, including threats to ecosystems like coral reefs in Mauritius and the delicate balance required to preserve the rich Aboriginal culture in Queensland.

However, through community engagement and sustainable tourism practices, these regions are making strides. In Queensland, initiatives like the Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger program highlight how local communities can take the lead in both conservation and tourism development. Similarly, Mauritius’ eco-certification programs encourage tourism businesses to adopt practices that benefit both the environment and the local community.
